Coreea de Nord a recunoscut că cele două rachete balistice testate miercuri au fost lansate de pe un așa-zis „sistem feroviar lansator de rachete”, adică un tren modificat care poate transporta și lansa rachete balistice camuflate în vagoane de marfă obișnuite. Trenul „atomic” are scopul de a lansa „lovituri împotriva oricăror forțe care ar amenința țara”, conform agenției de presă nord-coreene, preluate de Reuters.
Scopul celor două lansări a fost lovirea unei ținte aflate la 800 de kilometri în largul coastelor estice ale Coreei de Nord. Garda de Coastă Niponă a anunțat că cele două rachete au zburat aproximativ 750 de kilometri înainte să cadă în Marea Japoniei, în zona economică exclusivă a Japoniei. Conform armatei sud-coreene, care a monitorizat și ea lansarea, rachetele au atins o altitudine maximă de 60 de kilometri.
Acesta este prima lansare a Phenianului în ultimele șase luni. Rachetele reprezintă o versiune îmbunătățită a modelului KN-23, un tip de rachetă balistică cu rază scurtă de acțiune.

Testul a fost realizat de către Regimentul de Rachete al Trupelor de Căi Ferate și este prima recunoaștere oficială, din partea Phenianului, a acestei unități militare speciale, dar și o dovadă a intențiilor regimului nord-coreean de a-și diversifica modalitățile de lansare a rachetelor nucleare.
Botezate „trenurile Apocalipsei”, ideea unor garnituri feroviare capabile să lanseze atacuri nucleare a apărut în URSS și a fost analizată și de către SUA în timpul Războiului Rece, dar a fost ulterior abandonată.
Moscova a anunțat că e interesată de reluarea acestui proiect, sub forma noului sistem feroviar de rachete balistice intercontinentale „Barguzin” – un tren care arată ca orice tren de pasageri, capabil să străbată peste 2.400 de kilometri pe zi și să transporte până la șase rachete nucleare. Conform unui raport al Congresului SUA, acest proiect a fost însă abandonat în jurul anului 2017.
Un studiu al institutului de studii strategice RAND a arătat că aceste „trenuri atomice” – cum este cel prezentat recent de Phenian – prezintă și dezavantaje: căile ferate pot fi blocate de căderile de zăpadă, pot fi ușor bombardate, iar inamicul poate supraveghea mai ușor liniile de cale ferată (comparativ cu restul drumurilor din țară) pentru a găsi trenurile-țintă.
